Theatre Space North East CIC has continued to deliver a wide range of community-focused theatre and engagement projects across Sunderland and the wider region throughout the year ending March 2025. The company’s mission remains to make high-quality, inclusive theatre accessible to all, while supporting community wellbeing, local talent development, and place-based cultural growth. During the year, Theatre Space NE delivered a full calendar of activity, including outdoor and site-specific theatre productions, community workshops, and educational programmes. The company’s an-nual summer season of free Shakespeare in the Parks continued to attract diverse audiences, offering free access to professional theatre in local green spaces and encouraging family participation and civic pride. The company also supported community-devised performances, giving residents a platform to tell their own stories and explore local identity through creative collaboration. Work with schools, youth groups, and emerging artists provided opportunities for skills development, mentoring, and pathways into the creative industries. Over the winter months, the Christmas tour brought live performance to community centres, care set-tings, and schools—reaching audiences who might otherwise face barriers to participation in the arts. In addition to performance work, Theatre Space NE maintained its commitment to social impact through creativity, running projects that addressed social isolation, supported wellbeing, and built con-fidence through collective creative experiences. The company has strengthened partnerships with local authorities, cultural organisations, and voluntary sector partners to ensure theatre remains a vital part of the region’s social and cultural fabric. Through these combined activities, Theatre Space NE CIC has continued to demonstrate that accessi-ble, community-rooted theatre can have a lasting impact on people’s lives, fostering connection, pride, and creativity across the North East.
