Data sources & methodology

Data source: Companies House public register. CompanyMetrics is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or verified by Companies House.

What we do

We take public company register information and filed accounts, extract the financial figures, normalise them into a consistent structure and add classifications (industry, region, revenue and employee bands) so companies can be searched and compared.

Coverage

  • Register snapshot: 1 October 2026. Accounts filed Oct 2021 – Aug 2026.
  • 121,918 active, non-dormant companies whose most recent revenue figure is in GBP, above zero, and for a period ending within the last 5 years. This is a subset of UK companies: many file accounts that do not include turnover, so they are not covered.
  • Not included: dormant or dissolved companies, companies that don't report turnover, and director, shareholder or persons-with-significant-control records.

Key definitions

  • Revenue: turnover from the most recent period that reports it, in whole GBP.
  • Revenue growth: compared with the previous ~12-month period (periods 300–430 days apart; earlier value must be positive).
  • Profit margin: operating profit (else profit before tax) divided by revenue.
  • Industry: UK SIC 2007 section of the primary SIC code on the register.
  • Region: from the registered-office postcode via the ONS National Statistics Postcode Lookup.
  • Company size: indicative Companies Act 2006 class from the latest year only.
  • Revenue bands: Under £10k, £10k–£50k, £50k–£100k, £100k–£500k, £500k–£1m, £1m–£5m, £5m–£10m, £10m–£50m, £50m–£100m, £100m+.

Data quality

Each company carries a high / medium / low quality rating based on whether its profit and loss and balance sheet reconcile, plus caveat flags such as non-12-month periods or overdue accounts.

Limitations

  • Figures are as filed by companies. We don't audit or verify them.
  • Many small companies file abbreviated accounts, so profit, employee or balance-sheet figures may be absent.
  • The register sometimes holds two sets of accounts ending in the same year, for example after a change of year end. We show each period with its month and year, and calculate growth only between periods about 12 months apart.
  • For some active companies the latest accounts available to us are a few years old; newer accounts may exist at Companies House.
  • Periods differ between companies; each company's figures relate to its own latest period end.
  • Registered office location may differ from where a company actually trades.
