The Game Change Project is a Community Interest Company based in Newtown, Powys. We provide a lifeline for disengaged young people by providing a practical, outdoor learning environment where they can develop the confidence, motivation and skills to thrive and contribute to Mid Wales. Over the past year a total of 101 young people aged 13-24 have accessed our life skills programmes. Activities range from animal care, equine management, mechanics and learning on the land. They were referred to our organisation by schools, parents, social services, and other agencies, for various reasons including low confidence, mental health issues, anxiety, emotional based school avoidance, ADHD, ASD or other emotional or behavioural problems, which had led them to struggle in a mainstream classroom environment. After completing the programme 91% reported improvements in social skills, 88% reported improved confidence and 80% said they were more motivated. 78% agreed or strongly agreed with the statement "My wellbeing has improved significantly after attending the course”. In response to increasing mental health challenges, the organisation expanded from 144 to 216 sessions during the 2024/25 academic year. Our minibus continues to be a great asset and the running costs until 2027 have been covered by PAVO Small Health grant and sponsorship from Evabuild Ltd. The vehicle has opened new opportunities for disadvantaged young people to learn about local employment opportunities, college courses and volunteering, helping them to feel more connected, set goals and aspirations and become active citizens in their community. Our board continue to work towards diversifying our income and in this financial year have increased income generation through a mix of fundraising, small grants, donations and sales. We have set up a new fundraising committee to take this work forward. At the heart of the organisation’s success is a passionate team of staff and volunteers who believe in each young person’s potential. Staff members’ compassion and dedication provide crucial support, transforming lives and leaving a lasting impact on the community they serve. We have 4 regular volunteer mentors who say that being involved with the project gives them immense pride and satisfaction, helping them feel less isolated and improving their wellbeing. We are extremely grateful for support received during this financial year and would like to acknowledge the following funders and sponsors: The National Lottery Community Fund in Wales, Vinci Foundation, KFC Foundation, Arnold Clarke Foundation, People’s Postcode Community Foundation, Powys Health Charity and PAVO and Interior Products Group.
