Roots Coffee Lounge CIC
This financial year, Roots Coffee Lounge CIC has moved beyond established routines to embrace creative diversification and youth-led innovation. Enhanced Vocational Curriculum We have significantly expanded the "menu" of skills our young people acquire. In addition to front-of-house service, we have introduced: • The "Roots Bakery" Initiative: We are now teaching our young people the art of baking. This allows them to see a product through from raw ingredients to a sold item, teaching them about food science, precision, and commercial consistency. • Creative Branding & Ideation: We have begun involving our students in the "business" side of the lounge. By asking them to generate new menu ideas and contribute to our branding, we are fostering a sense of ownership and teaching them about marketing and entrepreneurial thinking. • Seasonal Floral Workshops: We have introduced seasonal flower arranging classes. These serve a dual purpose: they provide a new aesthetic skill for our trainees and offer the community a creative outlet, further diversifying our presence as a multi-use social space. Strengthening the Community Fabric Our role as a community anchor has been bolstered by our responsive programming: • Social Connection through Craft: By doubling the frequency of the Yarn Angels and maintaining the Roots Book Club, we continue to bridge the gap for those facing social isolation. • Local Music & Arts: The Roots Music Night continues to serve as a vital intimacy-scale venue for local talent to build professional confidence Expanded Stakeholder Network This year, we have expanded our stakeholder map to include West Notts College, alongside our existing partners: R.E.A.L Education, R.E.A.L Foundation Trust, Pleasley residents, local suppliers, and our internal team of employees and volunteers. Strategic Collaboration with Higher Education The inclusion of West Notts College as a key stakeholder has allowed us to align our training more closely with further education standards. • The Feedback: Consultations suggested that young people need a smoother transition between school-based work experience and college-level vocational courses. • The Action: We have refined our hospitality and baking curriculum to ensure the skills learned at Roots Coffee Lounge act as a "bridge" to the accredited courses offered by West Notts College, making our trainees more competitive applicants for higher-level study. Youth-Led Evolution Our most impactful consultations this year have been with the young people themselves. • The Feedback: Trainees expressed a desire for more creative input, and a "behind-the-scenes" look at how a business is run. • The Action: In response, we integrated them into our branding and service-design processes. This has not only improved student engagement but has also brought "Gen Z" insights into our marketing, ensuring the Coffee Lounge remains relevant and vibrant. Community & Local Authority Response Following our consultation regarding the lack of early-career opportunities, our successful registration for under-16 employment permits has been a direct response to local parents and schools. Furthermore, our upcoming Board Games Evening and the restructuring of the Book Club (into age-specific cohorts) are direct results of "active listening" during our informal daily interactions with Pleasley residents.
