Bournville Asset Build Project Significant progress has been made across community engagement, service delivery, and organisational development over the reporting period. Community Engagement and Asset-Based Work Our Community Development Worker continues to make exceptional contributions through the Bournville Asset Build Project. She coordinated Weston’s first Mela, a highly successful event that brought together diverse communities in a way that is unique within North Somerset. Her asset-based approach, particularly in supporting asylum seekers and minority ethnic groups during recent challenging times, has had a meaningful and often understated impact. She also organised a Shamanic Drumming session for the Rattlers group, which provided a powerful wellbeing experience for participants. She meets with staff from The Other Place, a central Weston community hub supporting minority ethnic communities, and agreed to explore closer collaborative working. She has also introduced a potential new Board member. Internal Collaboration with partner agencies Facilities co-ordinator successfully restarted quarterly FAHLC lunch meetings for organisations working within the building. These meetings have improved communication around staffing changes, use of the duty phone, and joint working, strengthening internal collaboration. Fuel Bank FAHLC was unexpectedly invited to distribute an additional £15,000 of fuel support by the end of September. Thanks to the reception team and outreach work with community hubs, the majority of this funding has been successfully delivered. Further funding later in the year is possible. Shop and Café Developments The shop is now being trialled on a five-day-a-week opening schedule to increase vibrancy within the centre and manage high stock donations. Early indications suggest increased income and a livelier atmosphere. We have increased volunteer recruitment and support, with strong backing from the reception team. In July, we appointed a new café chef, introducing a refreshed and healthier menu while retaining popular favourites. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with increased use from staff and visitors. Ian has since passed his Level 3 Food Safety and Hygiene qualification. Building and Services FAHLC has been approached by North Somerset Council Public Health to host a discreet needle exchange dispenser in the entrance lobby. This will support safer injecting practices and reduce infection risk. Access will be managed via reception-issued tokens, with all costs covered by NSC. Strategic Partnerships and Governance The Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) has been officially opened. FAHLC successfully ensured recognition of its role in initiating and hosting the CDC, which is the only one in the region embedded in a community setting. Attendance at the North Somerset Council Health and Wellbeing Board confirmed progress on a place-based approach, including a new ambition to reduce life expectancy inequalities by one year. Lottery Funding Success FAHLC’s partnership bid with Alliance Homes has been successfully approved by the National Lottery. FAHLC will become the lead agency as governance shifts locally. The funding will sustain and expand the Our Neighbourhood Project over four years, retaining core community-led activities such as green projects and local hubs, while strengthening physical activity and health creation work. This funding will enable further development of Community Development role and long-term community impact. Strategic Influence Chief Exec. has taken positions of significant strategic significance in the health and wellbeing systems for the Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire area. He not only represents the interests of the company but also the needs of local people we serve. Summary It has been another hugely successful year, with increased asset based community development, better services from the shop and the café, increased strategic influence across the system and the recognition provided by the award of the 4 year Lottery project.
