Drum Therapy Collective CIC
During this reporting period, the Drum Therapy Collective CIC has focused on delivering inclusive, community-based drumming activities designed to improve wellbeing, reduce social isolation, and strengthen community connections across Manchester. We established two regular community drumming groups: one in Wythenshawe at Dandelion Community Hub, and one in Withington at Ladybarn Community Hub. Through these two groups, we engaged approximately 70 local residents from a wide range of backgrounds and age groups. Participants included young families with children, people aged over 65, and individuals living with various mental and physical health support needs. All sessions were delivered free of charge to ensure accessibility and inclusion. These activities were made possible through funding from the Neighbourhood Investment Fund and the Living Well Fund of Wythenshawe Community Housing Group. The impact of the sessions has been strongly positive. Participants consistently reported improvements in mood, confidence, and social connection. One participant shared: “I attended a few of the drumming sessions and found them very uplifting. Both my friend and I felt they had a real positive impact on our mental health. The workshops were so interactive, allowing us to meet new people, build friendships, and truly relax.” The Withington group also contributed to wider community engagement by participating in a local square opening event attended by many residents and the Mayor, further strengthening community visibility and cohesion. In April, we expanded our impact by launching an outreach programme funded by the National Lottery Community Fund through the Awards for All programme. This initiative enabled us to deliver drum circle sessions in partnership with charities, community organisations, and established support groups working with individuals experiencing mental and physical health challenges. By the end of June, we had delivered 15 outreach sessions, reaching nearly 300 participants. Partner organisations included: Chorlton Good Neighbours Being There Each Step Dementia Caffe African Caribbean Care Group Indian Senior Citizen Centre Heather Care Blackley Community Hub Nephra Good Neighbours Lifted Together Dementia Support Manchester Young Lives Through these partnerships, we have extended our reach to older adults, carers, individuals living with dementia, culturally diverse communities, people living with chronic illnesses and young people. Our drum circle model has proven to be adaptable, inclusive, and effective in promoting wellbeing, encouraging participation, and fostering meaningful social interaction. Overall, our activities during this period have contributed to improved mental wellbeing, reduced social isolation, strengthened community cohesion, and increased access to creative health activities for underserved groups.
